Home Network

I have built a setup over time, adding new items when funds allow and taking advantage of home DIY to provide a fixed network where possible.

Most of the core network is located at Node-O

Node-0

This comms cabinet contains:

  • 24-port CAT7 Patch panel (all fully patched in to sockets of 2 or 4 around the house)
  • 24-port Gigabit smart switch  –
  • Synology DS1813+ with 6 x 4TB WD SATA drives and 2 x 500GB SSDs.  The NAS primarily provides the core storage requirements.
  • Unifi USG-3 Gateway Router
  • Unifi 8 port PoE switch
  • Lenovo ThinkServer150TS running ESXi and various Virtual Machines running the home services which reside within Docker containers
  • SamKnows Whitebox (Broadband monitoring trial across Europe)
  • CyberPower UPS x 2

Other networking items:

I use Ubiquiti Unifi Wi-fi access points (x4) which run via PoE located in Node-O. Sonos speakers are networked (hard wire) around the house and Spotify hooks in.

The home broadband is monitored by the European project SamKnows and they provide a modified router (known as the WhiteBox) which provides monitoring stats for the project, and for me to see how the speed is doing.  Never as good as Virgin Media advertise.

Zwave/Hue
I use a series of Zwave sensors and Philips Hue lights around the house and these feed in to Home Assistant.
